The Video Game Industry is imploding Anonymous 02/29/2024 (Thu) 18:35:05 Id: 0c7012 No. 940732 [Reply] [Last]
I wanted to make a thread for this since it seems every day there's either a massive amount of industry layoffs or some publisher splitting off. Most recently Toys for Bob and Saber Interactive have split from their previous holders with rumors of Gearbox being sold off or going private after splitting off from Embracer like Saber just did. Additionally 505 have just shut down a bunch of offices in Spain, Germany, and France. Since just last holiday there have been over 15,000+ layoffs in the video games industry with a lot of companies restructuring like Embracer and Sony after deals with the Saudi's and the Chinese have basically gone sour. This is in addition to games like Spider-Man 2 (2023) costing over 300 million dollars and with the constant failures of live service games, it makes sense why the industry is experiencing a soft crash as it were. It remains to be seen what will come of the video games industry and what will rise from the ashes. I'm expecting to see more smaller publishers pop up while the current publishers will focus on making smaller games with tighter budgets. That being said no one really knows where the industry will go from here. sources: https://archive.ph/YI6OK https://archive.is/ZzK5C https://archive.ph/3z9RF

>>1062072 >>1062018 All they had to do was stick with the formula they had already created with dragon age 2 and Mass effect 2, if I remember correctly those were the most popular games in those series. I mean it's a pretty simple formula that's been around for a long time. People love going around on fetch quests and adventures collecting party members and getting invested in the personal drama of each to get cool upgrades and items (or sex scenes I guess for some people). I haven't played Boulder's gate 3 but everything I've seen and heard about it just makes it seem like Mass effect 2 and Dragons age 2, dialogue options, party members, go experiment with a bunch of random BS rinse and repeat for fun and massive corporate profit!. (Why can't they seem to figure this out? That's how dragon warrior and final fantasy used to work, and until square screwed that up it worked just fine)

How should gamers fight problems with modern games? Anonymous 01/16/2025 (Thu) 06:30:01 Id: 30b9b2 No. 1061372 [Reply]
Greentext at least one problem and find solutions to the problem. 1) Bland "brown and bloom" colors and graphics, uncreative, uninviting, and visually unstimulating, that reduce atmosphere, emotional impact, and uniqueness 2) Crunch culture where employees work long hours under intense pressure to meet deadlines and deliver products, causing burnout and decreased product quaality 3) Degradation of the hobby as gaming became international and developers adapted design to cater to broader demographics 4) Digital rights management that requires online server authentication, or negatively impacts game performance, or limits how you can use the game 5) Diversity, equity, and inclusion biasing hiring processes at the expense of skills which reduces studio performance, competence, and morale 6) Excessive DLC that fragments the gaming experience, locking content behind additional purchases instead of including it in the initial release 7) Exploiting, cheating, and hacking online like aimbots and wallhacks, offline players usually know each other which discouraged local cheating due to social consequences 8) Game-as-a-service models, subscription and cloud services for gaming where you (((own nothing and be happy))) 9) Hyper-realism instead of artistic and aesthetic style, making games look generic as they strive for similar fidelity and lose unique artistic identity 10) Input lag making games feel more unresponsive, particularly in genres like fighting games, first-person shooters, or platformers needing precise movements or combos 11) Kernel-level anticheat that violate privacy and increases the risk malicious actors exploit security vulnerabiltiies to infect gamers with malware 12) Limited physical releases where many modern games are digital-only, and companies assume digital distribution, the PS5 Pro even lacks a disc drive 13) Loading screen saturation that frequently interrupts gameplay, wastes time, and breaks immersion 14) Monetization, microtransactions, loot boxes, and gambling mechanics and how developers design games around compulsive spending of players instead of delivering quality content 15) Movie games requiring significant "Triple A" budgets and minimizing player agency by sidelining gameplay and how they interact with the game world 16) Pay-to-win mechanics that let players gain advantages by purchasing powerful items or upgrades, undermining fair competition

>>1061977 >artisanal passion projects and hobbyists tinkering around with ideas I feel like the missing piece that would allow these two groups to fully compete with AAA slop is physical platforms. Back in the 80s and 90s you had home computers (like the Commodore for example), console-HC hybrids (e.g. the Speccy), and IBM clones that eventually became the PC and all of them were open or semi open. Now we've all got nothing but tightly closed platforms >Steam >Android >Apple >Nintendo >Sony >Microsoft We need either physical distribution of PC games and/or a new home computer type device.
>>1061655 >>1061684 Also, stop falling for marketing. Don't watch trailers or teasers. And stop being a retard that falls for (((hype))). Don't go buying a product on impulse, just because you thought a commercial looked "cool".
>>1061989 Well if you've been following the Mister hardware scene at all the barrier to entry is around 150 bucks and it's a fairly robust fpga platform that people have been able to pull off some pretty amazing miracles with when it comes to getting it to play almost every video game system from Atari up to the playstation, saturn, and 64. Don't really want to get into the hole fpga core versus emulation debate, and I don't really know how it would work to actually develop a native game on an fpga system, but I'm sure people have done that so you could probably make something pretty cool in that respect but you could also make anything to spec from any of those other systems I've mentioned you could make your own 32x game or neo Geo game or even a turbo graphics 16 game and what have you (there's even support for dos and some Windows 95 games if I remember correctly) but yeah you could develop old school games the old school way and actually actually put them out on cartridge or the card reader that somebody has made for the project (it's pretty cool) and somebody is even working on a CD drive so you could put your game out on CD even!

We'll watch some David Lynch movies this week for obvious reasons. Monday: Erasorhead (1977) Tuesday: Macross 7 (1994), Eps The Galaxy Is Calling Me, 42 - 47 Wednesday: Skip Thursday: The Hero Yoshihiko (2011) Eps 11, 12. Key of Evil Spirits 1 - 2 Friday: Blue Velvet (1986) I wanted to start Lodoss War this week but we can do that next for some Lynch films. Erasorhead needs no introduction. I haven't seen it in awhile as I'm not a fan of Lynch but that's not gonna stop me from streaming it. Macross 7 has a movie, The Galaxy is Calling Me. Basara gets lost on a frozen planet with Emilia Jenius, older sister of Mylene. Thursday is more Yoshihiko, starting S2 with that. And Friday is Blue Velvet, Lynch's murder mystery I haven't seen.

I know people were buying up a ton of gift and alt accounts just because of how god damn cheap it used to be. Now a lot of those accounts are just dead because of the stupid migration bullshit, where unless you had the original receipt and/or email used to acquire the account you effectively had no recourse, microsoft just held a knife to your head and said "we're not FORCING you, but if you can't deliver what we want we are taking the game away" and even if you COULD deliver a 15 year old receipt/email to migrate, and went through the arduous process of setting up a microsoft account just to play autism bricks, you could get your brand new account suspended the NEXT DAY, in which you are forced to identify yourself with a phone number "for security" to access your account again, which is fat load of horse shit because there is no prompt to set up 2fa in the first place when creating the account just to lure the player into a false sense of security. First you de-anonymize the players, tie all of their games together under on umbrella, one account, one terms of service, then you take away their games for violating the vague and arbitrary rules, it's free money in microsofts pocket because it's money they don't have to waste supporting those players and in-house servers, and if the player wants to play again well they have to get a new identity and buy it all over again, microsoft rubs their hands like flies on shit

D K DONKEY KONG Which is the best Donkey kong game and why is it tropical freeze? More importantly, how come Nintendo hasn't made any DK games lately? I have pretty much given up hope of a 3d collectathon like 64 but having Retro hammer out another 2d platformer can't be too much of a hassle. Maybe just have a new studio make a whole new kind of DK game? There is a lot of things you can do with DK and his extended family.

Haven't seen much discussion or hype for this one, and that's probably warranted seeing what I've played of it thus far. One hero, seven weapons, skill trees, wandering around an overworld map, side quests, collecting crafting materials, etc. I'm new to the genre and the series, except for the excellent Hyrule Warriors (the first one, not the shitheap that was Age of Calamity), and while I do find it fun all I can see is shit that would piss off genre and series purists. As a fairly distant outsider though, I admit I'm having fun, though not heaping gobs of it. The overworld map reminds me of Heroes of Might and Magic in a way. DWO definitely could be better, but the main point is I'm absolutely lost with these fucking names. They all sound the same to me with few exceptions. I know of Lu Bu from the memes, and Cao Cao stands out because the name is pronounced Tsow Tsow which, OK, I'm familar with Welsh so I'll give that a pass, but fuck me everyone else is named Gaun Yu or Yu Guan or Lie Bu or Lei Schwang or some fucking thing. I'm lost as fuck. The music is good though, it's the kind of upbeat energetic Jrock that usually accompanies these titles and other nip action games. Kind of reminds me of Ys 8's OST a bit, heavy on the guitar and drums. The voice acting though, well, the lines are said and they're fairly clear but I guess it's hard to have passion for such stilted dialogue. I suppose it's a direct translation of the rather rigid Mandarin so I'd prefer that to some "punched up" localiser bullshit, so I'll give it a pass on that account. Overall, I'd call the "modernising" of Dynasty Warriors a success, since I'm having fun and I'm not thrown into the middle of an existing franchise in which I'd be even more lost than I already am with these yellow turban fuckers in the Puyang province. I know there's some significance to the Puyang province, wasn't the communist party born there? Or Winnie the Pooh himself? Fuck man, this is my first taste of bugman history and I'm lost. But still, the game is fun for a complete newcomer, though whether that leads to greater sales...I don't know, I don't think so. Purists will likely be driven away and I didn't even know this game was a thing until I asked my local game store if anything had come out recently and I was bored so I picked it up (yeah I "bought" it but their generous return policy means I keep jack shit and get my money back on four out of five games). According to the Playstation tracker thing I'm 16% of the way through the game and I've played probably two hours, so I'll likely be finished with the main campaign by the end of the weekend. Any genre fans interested in this game and want to weigh in? I'm curious how you'd feel about it.

>>1061969 >Any genre fans interested in this game and want to weigh in? I'm curious how you'd feel about it. Not exactly "that" dedicated to the series, but have read enough comments to see that the only two DW games worth playing of the mainline series (Unless you care about seeing gameplay evolution) are DW7 and DW8, but for different reasons. If you care more about the story presentation, play DW7. If you care more about the gameplay and number of playable characters, then go with DW8. And if you're really autstic about it, DW5 because it was the last game to utuilize the moral system that actually tracked each and every single soldier throughout a battle. You don't really "need" to play the rest of the mainline games as all of the games are just fantastical adaptations of Romance Of The Three Kingdoms.

Marvel Rivals Thread Anonymous 01/07/2025 (Tue) 00:57:11 Id: 4a6ea5 No. 1058215 [Reply] [Last]
Not sure if you fags saw the news, but apparently Overwatch has got its ass handed to it by the Chinese in the Hero Shooter department. If you have been living under a rock there's a new hero shooter ///game\\\ called Marvel Rivals that has been doing extremely well on Steam and the dev team even supports Linux/Steam Deck which is a huge shock considering how many devs don't bother supporting Linux on the anti-cheat side of things. It also has around 30 playable characters available for free and might be getting more modes such as a PvE mode in addition to the existing PvP modes. I played the game for a bit, while I had some fun with the game, It's not something I can really put hours into. More like a short burst here and there, although that might be because I'm getting old. That being said I like blasting people around with The Punisher even if his logo is wrong. Although to be fair to this game, mostly everyone on the roster got a massive redesign specifically for the game. Honestly, I just like having a game where I can fuck around for an hour or two without having to boot into my Windows drive. Have you guys played this game? If so what do you think about it.

This whole week I ended up building a lot of menu architecture out. Which is great. That's the only thing that really matters in a JRPG.This iteration doesn't even have a field/combat module yet. I've been chunking the game's systems similar to how Final Fantasy's old kernel module system worked, (seen here: https://q-gears.sourceforge.net/gears.pdf) I suppose at this pace, if I get the game's Field and Combat cores working in two weeks each, we'd probably start having something entering "theoretically playable" by late February.

We will be taking the bigger stories from these threads and making them into their own threads, Anons are welcome to do the same. We will NOT be heavily enforcing these threads, so please keep that in mind. Basically things like game announcements, live stream events, new gaming hardware, etc. should have their own threads while shit like NEW GUILTY GEAR DLC 3 "SLAYER" or something like that should be posted in this thread. While we won't ban anyone for doing the former, we encourage anons to use their best judgement when posting news content.

The only "3-hour" game that gave me a good enough impression was Hylics 1, which should last 3-4 hours. Though I recommend Hylics 2 much more, though it's a 8-hour ride minimum. Otherwise there is also Zortch, it's a short FPS game (4-5 hours) that does the job well.
>>1061387 A few more recent ones I played were Path of Achra and Superliminal. PoA is a turn based roguelike game that is about making pretty crazy character builds. Some get pretty hilariously broken at times. Superliminal is a perspective puzzle based game that gave me Stanley Parable mixed with Portal vibes. >>1061421 This is a good point.

>>1061428 If it's anything like Tokyo Mirage Sessions (what a fucking waste of a cross-over, it still makes me angry) it will have the western censorship in all versions, even the Japanese version which actually had pantsu.
>>1061430 >Assault Suit Leynos, BattleTech, Chained Echoes, Daemon X Machina, MechWarrior Online, Side Arms. <Chained Echoes 2022 RPG of the year for me, influenced by Breath of Fire, Final Fantasy VI, Secret of Mana, and Terranigma. A week late, but I just noticed MechWarrior 5 Clans under performed and the devs lost a chunk of their staff. https://archive.is/hEvc9

Video games as art Anonymous 01/10/2025 (Fri) 09:17:44 Id: 75b412 No. 1059497 [Reply] [Last]
It's been 12 years since Roger Ebert said video games can never be art. Was Ebert wrong? Where, below, did Ebert go wrong? What is art? Can video games be art? What video games are art? >Having once made the statement above, I have declined all opportunities to enlarge upon it or defend it. That seemed to be a fool’s errand, especially given the volume of messages I receive urging me to play this game or that and recant the error of my ways. Nevertheless, I remain convinced that in principle, video games cannot be art. Perhaps it is foolish of me to say “never,” because never, as Rick Wakeman informs us, is a long, long time. Let me just say that no video gamer now living will survive long enough to experience the medium as an art form. >What stirs me to return to the subject? I was urged by a reader, Mark Johns, to consider a video of a TED talk given at USC by Kellee Santiago, a designer and producer of video games. I did so. I warmed to Santiago immediately. She is bright, confident, persuasive. But she is mistaken. >I propose to take an unfair advantage. She spoke extemporaneously. I have the luxury of responding after consideration. If you want to follow along, I urge you to watch her talk, which is embedded below. It’s only 15 minutes long, and she makes the time pass quickly. >She begins by saying video games “already ARE art.” Yet she concedes that I was correct when I wrote, “No one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great poets, filmmakers, novelists and poets.” To which I could have added painters, composers, and so on, but my point is clear. >Then she shows a slide of a prehistoric cave painting, calling it “kind of chicken scratches on walls,” and contrasts it with Michelangelo’s ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Her point is that while video games may be closer to the chicken scratch end of the spectrum, I am foolish to assume they will not evolve. >She then says speech began as a form of warning, and writing as a form of bookkeeping, but they evolved into storytelling and song. Actually, speech probably evolved into a form of storytelling and song long before writing was developed. And cave paintings were a form of storytelling, perhaps of religion, and certainly of the creation of beauty from those chicken-scratches Werner Herzog is even now filming in 3-D. >Herzog believes, in fact, that the paintings on the wall of the Cave of Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc in Southern France should only be looked at in the context of the shadows cast on those dark walls by the fires built behind the artists, which suggests the cave paintings, their materials of charcoal and ochre and all that went into them were the fruition of a long gestation, not the beginning of something–and that the artists were enormously gifted. They were great artists at that time, geniuses with nothing to build on, and were not in the process of becoming Michelangelo or anyone else. Any gifted artist will tell you how much he admires the “line” of those prehistoric drawers in the dark, and with what economy and wit they evoked the animals they lived among. >Santiago concedes that chess, football, baseball and even mah jong cannot be art, however elegant their rules. I agree. But of course that depends on the definition of art. She says the most articulate definition of art she’s found is the one in Wikipedia: “Art is the process of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions.” This is an intriguing definition, although as a chess player I might argue that my game fits the definition. >Plato, via Aristotle, believed art should be defined as the imitation of nature. Seneca and Cicero essentially agreed. Wikipedia believes “Games are distinct from work, which is usually carried out for remuneration, and from art, which is more concerned with the expression of ideas…Key components of games are goals, rules, challenge, and interaction.” >But we could play all day with definitions, and find exceptions to every one. For example, I tend to think of art as usually the creation of one artist. Yet a cathedral is the work of many, and is it not art? One could think of it as countless individual works of art unified by a common purpose. Is not a tribal dance an artwork, yet the collaboration of a community? Yes, but it reflects the work of individual choreographers. Everybody didn’t start dancing all at once.

>>1061277 >like a no-commentary walkthrough could replace for some games like donkey kong. Bad example. A no-commentary walkthrough can replace games that are all about story and not gameplay. Donkey Kong has a story, but the gameplay is very much the focus. You do not at all get the same experience by just watching it. But The Last of Us? Yeah, you can probably just watch that. >but rote repeatability is a demerit on the game being art in a medium of interactivity. I wouldn't say solvability is a demerit on something being art. This implies randomized games are more artistic than non-randomized games, and if anything, I'd argue the opposite, since they're less designed, and I'd argue the design is what makes it art. (But even randomized games are still designed and are still art.) And even once a game is "solved," not only is there still usually great challenge in playing it in the solved fashion, but even if there wasn't, there would still be the interactivity of interpretation, as other media have. Only now you are not just interpreting the pictures and sound, but also the more direct forms of interactivity, even if you've "solved" it. You could solve the movements but not the interpretations.
>>1061328 You haven't fully experienced a game until you've destroyed it. It's meant to be interacted with, unlike a painting or movie :^)
>>1061586 Paintings and movies are also meant to be interacted with, just not quite as much. Destroying it is also interacting with it and experiencing it. It's frowned upon since you're ruining it for other people, but it's still a way of experiencing the art.
