>This is the game console canon. These are the only consoles that mattered. Standard design, all-purpose, covered all bases, natural progression of tech.
But that's fucking wrong on so many levels.
The Atari 2600, despite not being the first home game console (That was the Odyssey), popularized video games outside of the arcades.
In addition to officially being configurable into a legit home computer. The NES was a step-down from it's Famicom design in Japan (Mostly resulting in lower-quality audio), and wasn't able to connect to the disk system add-on that loaded bigger games faster and cheaper than cartridges could provide at the time (Without adding more chips). The PC-Engine/TurboGrafx introduced CD technology to home consoles, and introduced the possibility of playing full console games on a portable device. The Genesis had peripherals that allowed games to be played across the net (Meganet), and introduced the concept of downloadable games with the Sega Channel (
Which Nintendo previously considered and abandoned with the FDS). The Neo Geo made it possible to play full original unaltered arcade games on home consoles for the first time. The 3DO, the Jaguar, and the 32X solidified that consoles had now entered the "32-bit" and "3D" era of gaming. Despite many myths, the Saturn was actually the preferred console for game development during the start of the fifth gen due to it's more advanced rendering capabilities, until around '97 when developers capitulated to market demands with the PS1 proving to be more popular and successful. And the Dreamcast was the first console designed out of the box to be compatible with the internet to the point that it was almost a discount computer, on top of establishing many of the norms for online gaming.
>Especially after gen 6 since everything is also on PC
An overwhelming amount of PC ports were either inferior, lacking content, or out-right broken compared to their console counterparts until around 2016. Even then, there's still dozens of games that are still exclusive to at least one console (And/or no PC version) to this day.
