/vb/ vidya music Anonymous 04/20/2024 (Sat) 15:43:36 No. 1719
Let's vibe to our favorite game music.
>>2483 Who said Sonic games all have good music?
Sorry about the kino
>>2489 The fact that this is the one Sonic game with bad music is what it's most remembered for. Well that and the fact that former Sonic comic writer Ken Penders, who wrote some of the worst comics ever created (Sonic or no) sued over the game because he thought the game was based on his comics. As if he was writing Sonic comics for over a decade under the impression that Sega wouldn't be allowed to use any ideas that appeared first in the comics. For the record, the ideas he refers to are that there is an evil tribe of echidnas that got sent to a prison dimension, then one girl one gets out and becomes a love interest for Knuckles and they fight her tribe. The evil tribe of echidnas was implied as far back as Sonic 2's manual, though they didn't get more explicitly mentioned until Sonic Adventure, and they didn't actually appear on screen until Sonic Chronicles. Ken Penders' story that introduced this concept came out well after Sonic 2, but shortly before Sonic Adventure. But there was actually a French comic book that used the concept before Penders. The prison dimension that Penders used was blatantly a ripoff of The Phantom Zone from Superman comics. Penders notably ripped off Superman and Justice League comics with his very first Sonic story where Sonic went to the backwards universe and met Anti-Sonic and the Anti-Freedom Fighters, which are just Ultraman and the Crime Syndicate (the evil Superman and Evil Justice League from the backwards universe). However, Penders called the prison dimension The Twilight Zone (because the comic already used the word "Zone" to refer to other dimensions, and this was a fun reference to the tv show). In Sonic Chronicles, the prison dimension the evil echidnas are sent to is called the Twilight Cage. In the "Official Sonic Comic Encyclopedia," a spinoff of the comic series Penders got fired from years earlier, the writer who replaced him explicitly said The Twilight Cage and the Twilight Zone were just different names for the same thing, and that both groups of evil echidnas got sent there at different times. This is basically the best argument Penders has that Sega was even aware of him. Not the encyclopedia, since Sega probably wasn't aware of that, but yes, Twilight Cage is a somewhat specific name that does seem like it might be connected to Twilight Zone. Also there is the girl that leaves the evil tribe to join Knuckles. That's a pretty generic concept, though. Anyway, Penders won the case by arguing that he never signed any contracts to work for Archie, even though he talked about the contracts publicly many times before. Archie Comics, turns out, is absurdly mismanaged (this is the least of it), and actually lost his original contract from 1994 or whatever year it was. They had photocopies, but Penders argued they were forged and the judge didn't care enough to rule on that before Sega told Archie to just drop the fucking case because Penders' comics were fucking shit, and Sonic Chronicles is fucking shit, and none of these products were worth reprinting anyway.
>>2569 You sound like a sonic autist so what was the deal with the music and michael jackson?
>>2725 I'm not him but Yuji Naka, the famous inside trader who also happened to co-create Sonic, tweeted that Sonic 3 used Michael Jackson's music when Sonic Origins abandoned the original soundtrack to use new arrangements from Jun Senoue. https://twitter.com/nakayuji/status/1539944869862354944
>>2745 He should be careful shooting the blue portal, if an orange one's on the other side he might ACK himself.
>>2725 >>2785 Jackson liked video games and had a previous relationship with Sega due to Moonwalker, which had three different versions that were three different games. It was a big selling point for the Genesis early on, before Sonic. So they got him on board, and he was also working with producer Brad Buxer, who was one of Jackson's regular guys. Buxer later claimed that Jackon wasn't pleased with the quality of the sound coming out of the Genesis, and thus decided not to go through with the whole thing, but this sounds like bullshit because, as mentioned, he already knew what the Genesis sounded like due to Moonwalker. Also this all happened in 1993, so there were plenty of other reasons this relationship may have soured. Some people argued over the years that some songs sounded like Jackson's songs. For example, there is a bit in Carnival Night Zone that sounds like a bit from Jam. To this day it's unclear if this is Jackson's direct influence, or the influence of Brad Buxer, who for all we know may be responsible for the bit in Jam as well. But many years later, it came out that the theme for Ice Cap Zone was actually a Genesis adaptation of an unreleased song called Hard Times, from Buxer's previous band, The Jetzons. It's very blatant, and when the song was eventually released, the cover was the background for Ice Cap Zone, acknowledging it. So Buxer definitely had a lot of involvement, as that was a song that had nothing to do with Jackson. When the PC version of Sonic 3 was released in like 1997, they removed some songs and replaced them with others. The sound quality of these songs sucked balls as they were shitty midis or something. Many years later, a beta for Sonic 3 leaked which had these songs in their original, Genesis forms. They sounded much better. "Coincidentally," these songs that were changed were all ones people said sounded more like Michael Jackson's music. Other songs very much sounded like music from Jun Senoue, a guy who started doing Sonic music in Sonic 3, but went on to be the main music guy for most of the games to this day, including being the lead guy behind Crush 40, the band that does all those rock songs for the 2000s era Sonic games (and some after, to this day). Notably, he reuses a lot of riffs here and there, but mostly only from his own songs. The ones that got removed in the 1997 rerelease are not ones he references in later games. When Sonic Origins released, the music from those levels was removed again, like in 1997, but now higher-quality versions of those songs first heard in 1997 were included. Of course opinions are mixed. People want the ones originally released with the game, but these songs were made before Jackson's involvement came along, by the guy who did the rest of the music for this game and most later Sonic games. Jackson came along and replaced his songs, technically. NiGHTS into Dreams creator, Yuji Naka, (who also worked on Sonic a bit,) did say at this time confirmation that Jackson did the music that was replaced. However, it frankly still remains unclear how much of it was really Jackson's composition, and how much was Buxer's, given that Buxer clearly had a big influence on Sonic 3's music, and also likely had big influence on Jackson's music from the era. The two guys were collaborators at the time, but Jackson got more credit because he was way more famous. I'm sure Buxer would give Jackson more credit than himself, but he's probably did come up with a lot of beats.
i've recently found khinsider, it has pretty much every vidya album you could think of

>>4958 rule 30, girls do not exist on the internet
>>4811 Animal Crossing for GameCube was basically Animal Forest for Nintendo 64 but in English. Has the Nintendo 64 game been translated for Nintendo 64 yet?
>>5387 >Animal Crossing for GameCube was basically Animal Forest for Nintendo 64 but in English. Ackshually, Animal Crossing for Gamecube is an English localized version of Doubutsu no Mori+, a Gamecube game only released in Japan. Doubutsu no Mori+ is an enhanced and expanded version of Doubutsu no Mori (Animal Forest), which was released earlier the same year on the Nintendo 64. There are many differences between Animal Forest and Animal Crossing. >Has the Nintendo 64 game been translated for Nintendo 64 yet? Not that I know of. Whatever translation efforts for the game that existed seem to have stalled years ago, with no signs of them continuing. Not even Doubutsu no Mori+ has been fully translated to English. I don't even think Doubutsu no Mori e+ has been translated to English, even after all this time.
